文革后期，13岁的城市女孩怡兰看望下放到偏远山区桃花寨当小学教师的母亲，认识了土家族少女阿桃一家，阿桃凭借高超的刺绣技艺供养妹妹上学。阿桃善良、清纯、善良的性格深深打动了怡兰，二人如姐妹般亲近，童年的轨迹渐渐重合：她们一起看疯癫的阿婆，一起买红鞋子跑过每一寸土地，一起挑染染布，一起经历阿桃小妹被山猪偷走的伤痛。随着母亲的平反回流，怡兰也与阿桃分开。两个小姑娘的轨迹从此不再重合，然而多年后，怡兰到国外工作，在参观一个国际民间艺术精品展时，一眼就认出了阿桃的大型刺绣——《桃花寨》。。During the 1977 El Salvadoran presidential election, public unrest is at an all-time high over fears of election fraud.
